Cooked Red Cabbage


 This recipe serves


  • 1 small head red cabbages
  • 2 tbsp butter Butter, without salt
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 medium cooking apples, peeled, cored and chopped Apples, raw, with skin
  • 1/4 tsp pepper Spices, pepper, black
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves Spices, cloves, ground
  • 1 tsp salt Salt, table
  • 1/4 cup white vinegar Vinegar, white
  • ½-1 cup water ( maybe more)
  • 2 tbsp red currant jelly Jelly, currant


Step 1

Shred cabbage finely and chop having removed all core. In a pan, saute onion and butter til soft. Add cabbage and cook gently for 5 minutes. Add apples, salt and pepper water , vinegar, sugar and cloves. Stir well; cover and cook until cabbage is tender. Watch that it does not dry out; but if there is a lot of liquid reduce to 1/2 cup. Add jelly. heat 10 mins more
