Ingredients

  • 150 ml Shortening Shortening, household, lard and vegetable oil
  • 175 ml Granulated sugar Sugars, granulated
  • 1 egg Egg, whole, raw, fresh
  • 5 ml vanilla Vanilla extract
  • 2 ml almond extract Nuts, almond extract
  • 425 ml all purpose flour Wheat flour, white, all-purpose, enriched, unbleached
  • 5 ml baking powder Leavening agents, baking powder, double-acting, sodium aluminum sulfate
  • 2 ml salt Salt, table
  • 48 maraschino cherries Cherries, Maraschino, canned, heavy syrup
  • 125 ml icing sugar

Method

Step 1

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees (F)Cream sugar, egg, vanilla and almond extract in large bowl at medium speed of electric mixer until well blendedCombine flour, baking powder and salt. Add to creamed mixture, beating a low speed until smooth.Wrap dough in very thin layer around cherries. Place on ungreased baking sheet.Bake at 350 degrees (F) for 10 to 12 minutes. CoolRoll in icing sugar
