Our 2010 Canada Day weekend was one that any mother would wish for. My three sons with their families visiting. Now what does that usually mean when visiting the Claggetts on a holiday weekend – Food and lots of it! We broke the bank and went on a food shopping spree. Every cooler and refrigerator at our house in the thousand islands was stocked with food. I planned a menu and knew there would be a lot of available hands at the ready to help with the preparations.

Butter tarts

The first thing on the menu to be made was butter tarts, a very Canadian tradition. My sons are crazy for these as are the grandchildren. The pastry cups were being filled with the sugary buttery filling just as our family members began to arrive. Some of the tarts with raisins and some without. Well a sweet sugary start to the food weekend was the hit it always has been. My menu for the weekend is provided below. It includes a Mediterranean cruise menu that followed the flavors we had on our 50th anniversary cruise. By the end of the weekend I think we were all feeling a little food hangover.

I hope your Canada day weekend was as enjoyable as ours. My husband, Bill, and I also enjoyed the lovely cake provided for us by our children for our 50th anniversary. If you need a cake for a special occasion and don’t want to make it yourself we would all recommend Cakes by Krista if your in the Kingston, Ontario area. We will post and link as many recipes as we can to this menu post.
